Jörð | Earth – Áslaug Jónsdóttir

Nú líður senn að lokum sýningarinnar JAÐARLAND / BORDERLAND sem opnaði í janúar í KCC Center for Book Arts í University of Southern Maine í Portland, Maine, í Bandaríkjunum.  Sýningin stendur til 30. apríl. „Jörð | Earth“ heitir eitt verkanna á sýningunni og er eftir Áslaugu Jónsdóttur. Hún kynnir hér verkið í myndum og texta.

„Hringlaga opnurnar eru eins og sjálfstæð hvel eða jarðarkringlur, en lokuð er bókin fjórðungur úr hring og opnuð getur hún myndað hálfkúlu. Í verkinu eru ljósmyndir af fjölbreytilegu yfirborði jarðar, gjarnan þar sem vindar, frost og snjór, flóð eða þurrkar hafa reynt á þolmörk svarðar og jarðar. Líklega er okkur eðlislægt að leita í gróskumikla, frjósama og blómlega náttúru, en þessi jaðarsvæði eru ekki síður heillandi því þar opinberast oft undraverður sigur lífmagnsins. Orðið „jörð“ hefur margar merkingar sem tengjast órjúfanlega: reikistjarnan jörð, heimkynni okkar, yfirborð jarðar, haglendi, bújörð, jarðvegurinn … – lítið orð með ofurmerkingu.“

ARKIR’s book art exhibition BORDERLAND in KCC Center for Book Arts at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine, USA, is soon to end, it closes April 30. But we continue to post photos and information on a selection of works from the exhibition. This time it is Áslaug Jónsdóttir who presents her artwork “Jörð | Earth”.

“This book is a collection of round shaped images, each one like an orb of its own. Half-open the book forms a hemisphere, closed the form is a quarter of a circle. The photographs show various surfaces of the land, of the ground: the earth. The seasons and the soil, the dirt under our feet, all what deserves to be valued and cherished and given time to observe. We tend instinctively to seek the green, fertile and flourishing nature, but the peripheral areas of the earth: the land where wind and rain, frost and snow, flood and draught make it just about habitable, are no less fascinating, as they so often reveal the amazing victory of life. The word „earth“ has many meanings that are closely linked, indeed a small word with a huge significance!“

Hér kynnum við eitt verkanna á sýningunni JAÐARLAND / BORDERLAND sem nú stendur yfir í KCC Center for Book Arts í University of Southern Maine í Portland, Maine, í Bandaríkjunum. Arnþrúður Ösp Karlsdóttir kynnir verkið sitt „Húm“ í myndum og texta.

„Húm er tími dagsins þegar dimmir, sólin hverfur og birta og litir dofna í umhverfinu. Heimurinn verður gegnsær í gráum tónum, ljós og skuggar mynda ákveðna stemningu eða andrúmsloft. Í bókverkunum, sem unnin eru með svörtu bleki og vaxi á vatnslitapappír, vinn ég með gegnsæi, ljós og skugga í gráum litatónum.“

“Húm. Dusk, the time when day turns into night. The light from the sun fades, colors gradually disappear from around us and we are left in a world of transparent grays, the subtle atmospheric twilight of a shadowy transition into darkness. In these artist books, I am using black ink and wax on watercolor paper, achieving semi-transparency, trying to recreate the mood of ‘húm’.“

Við höldum áfram með kynningar á verkum sem finna má á sýningunni JAÐARLAND / BORDERLAND sem nú stendur yfir í KCC Center for Book Arts í University of Southern Maine í Portland, Maine, í Bandaríkjunum. „Ættarakur“ heitir eitt verkanna á sýningunni og er eftir Kristínu Þóru Guðbjartsdóttur. „Bókin er ættarskrá. Skráning á afkomendum foreldra minna, sem árið 2012, þegar bókin var gerð, töldu um 72 manns. Ef bókin yrði endurgerð í dag mynd hún innihalda hátt í hundrað nöfn. Þegar bókin er opnuð, spretta nafnaspjöldin upp, skellast saman nánast eins og í samræðum og sveiflast til og frá þegar bókin er dregin út og þanin sundur og saman eins og harmóníka. Þegar bókin er handfjötluð enn nánar og leikið með form hennar, vefjast og fléttast nafnaspjöldin saman og mynda nánast hreiður. Öll erum við stök rétt eins og nafnaspjöldin en eigum okkur sameiginlegar tengingar og rætur.“

“This book is a family record. It is a list of my parents’ descendants who in 2012, when the book was created, numbered a total of 72 people. If repeated today the book would include almost 100 names. When the book is opened the tabs or flags containing the individual names pop up, clash against each other as if to communicate, and sway back and forth when the book is dragged open like an accordion. Further play with the book’s form results in the interweaving of the tabs into a nestlike shape. We are all one of a kind like the name-tabs while still possessing common connections and roots.“

Fjöll | Mountains – Svanborg Matthíasdóttir

Við höldum áfram að kynna verk af sýningunni JAÐARLAND / BORDERLAND sem stendur yfir í KCC Center for Book Arts í University of Southern Maine í Portland, Maine, í Bandaríkjunum. Sýningunni lýkur nú í lok apríl. Eitt verkanna á sýningunni er „Fjöll“ eftir Svanborgu Matthíasdóttur. Verkinu lýsir hún í textanum hér fyrir neðan.

„Land, landslag, fjöll, fjarlægðir. Samspil ávalra, láréttra og hallandi lína. Form, bygging, fantasía. Ávalt form blaðsíðnanna var kveikjan að innihaldi bókarinnar, samspili forma, lína og byggingar landslagsins sem á sér enga sérstaka fyrirmynd í raun. Eiginleikar efnanna, litar og pappírs, voru einnig áhrifavaldar í sjónrænni framvindu verksins.
Bókin er einstök, gerð árið 2017 með vatnslit, vatnslitapappír og lími.“

“Land, landscape, mountains, distances. An interaction of oval, horizontal and diagonal lines. Form, composition and fantasy. From the oval shape of the pages stem the play of lines, forms and composition which portray these fantasy landscapes. The properties of the materials used, the type of paper and paint, were a controlling factor in the development of the visual outcome.
This book is a one-of-a-kind, made in 2017.“
