🇮🇸 Við ætlum að halda áfram að birta minnispunkta frá ferðinni okkar til San Francisco og bókverkamessunni í Richmond. Hér neðar eru myndir og texti frá Sigurborgu Stefánsdóttur. CODEX VII bókaverkamessan í Kaliforníu fór fram dagana 3.-6. febrúar 2019.

Nancy Loeber: Það var eitthvað heillandi við þessar fölu andlitsmyndir unnar með tréristum, sem hún svo brýtur upp með því að líma stundum yfir ákveðin svæði með pappírsklippi.

Nancy Loeber: There was something fascinating about these pale faces and soft images (woodcuts), the artist then brakes up by using collage and various paper bits, making each book unique.

Redfoxpress, Ireland. I noticed these works because they were quite apart from the rest. A bit chaotic but so much energy and joy!

🇮🇸 Það er ekki auðvelt að velja uppáhaldsverk úr öllum þeim fjölda verka sem voru sýnd á CODEX VII en við ætlum þó að gera tilraun til að birta nokkra pistla með myndum og upplýsingum um verk og listamenn sem vöktu athygli okkar. Þessi úttekt verður auðvitað á engan hátt tæmandi. Hér neðar eru myndir og texti frá Svanborgu Matthíasdóttur.
CODEX VII bókaverkamessan í Kaliforníu fór fram dagana 3.-6. febrúar 2019.

🇬🇧 It is not easy, and in fact impossible, to choose favorites from all the huge number of works that were shown at CODEX VII. Still, we are going to post a selection of photos and information about works and artists that caught our attention. Below is Svanborg’s pick.

PIERRE WALUSINSKI – LIBRARIE NICAISE



Nágranni okkar á Codex-borði 124 var herramaðurinn Pierre Walusinski frá Librairie Nicaise í París, sem var stofnað árið 1943 á 145 Boulevard Saint-Germain, hvar starfsemin hefur verið til húsa allar götur síðan. Af hógværð og ástríðu fyrir handverki, hönnun og list leiddi Walusinski okkur inn í leyndardóma bókverka sinna. Þar skoðaði ég meðal annarra eftirminnilegra bóka; Séquelle eftir Jean Tardieu & Petr Herel og bókina Des hirondelles et de quelques oiseaux connus, méconnus, ou inconnus décrits par le Comte de Buffon et Dado, Fata Morgana, 1988, verk eftir Louise Bescond. Hún gerir einstaklega fallegar bækur, klassískar, elegant og nútímalegar.

Our neigbour at Codex on table 124 was the gentleman Pierre Walusinski from Librairie Nicaise in Paris, founded in 1943 at 145 Boulevard Saint-Germain, where it still resides. With pride and respect for the art, craftsmanship and design of the art on display Walusinski guided us into the secrets of his books. I remember especially the two; Séquelle eftir Jean Tardieu & Petr Herel, and Des hirondelles et de quelques oiseaux connus, méconnus, ou inconnus décrits par le Comte de Buffon et Dado, Fata Morgana, 1988 made by Louise Bescond.

VERONIKA SCHÄPERS

Á borði Veronicu Schapers voru ótrúlega fínlegar og glæsilegar bækur. Sláandi vandaðar og alveg einstakar. Japönsk áhrif, ljós litbrigði og gegnsæi voru einkennandi fyrir bækurnar. Ég skoðaði m.a. bókina með ljóðunum „Weiße Verben“/ White Verbs sem Durs Grünbein orti eftir að hann hafði í fyrsta sinn séð málverk Kazimirs Malevichs, “Suprematist Composition: White on White” í New York Museum of Modern Art. Dásamlegt verk. Önnur bók Veroniku Schäpers, 26°57, 3’N ,142°16,8’E (The Squid Book) er ekki síður spennandi.

I came across a collection of incredibly delicate and elegant books on Veronica Schapers’ table. They were beautifully made and quite unique, mostly light in color, semitransparent and had a Japanese feel to them. The book Durs Grünbein’s poem “Weiße Verben”/ White Verbs is a response to his first encounter with Kazimir Malevich’s painting “Suprematist Composition: White on White” in the New York Museum of Modern Art. A beautiful book . And another one of Veronika Schäpers books; 26°57, 3’N ,142°16,8’E (The Squid Book) is no less exciting.

EDITION DESPALLES


Edition Despalles: Augnakonfekt, vönduð, falleg og „nútímaleg“ bókverk. Notkun á lit, formum, efni og handbragði bæði heillaði mig og var mér minnisstætt. Ef smellt er á slóðirnar má sjá tvær af bókunum sem ég heilaðist af hjá Despalles: Weder Senf noch Safran | Ni sanve ni safran eftir Franz Mon, Jean-Claude Loubières og Johannes Strugalla, og Cinabre eftir Johannes Strugalla.
Despalles útgáfufyrirtækið var stofnað af þeim Despalles og Strugalla árið 1982. Þeir reka gallerí í París og prentverkstæði í Mainz. Þeir eru í samvinnu við bæði þýska og franska listamenn.

Edition Despalles: A treat for the eye, elaborate, beautiful and “modern” artists books. The use of color, forms, materials and craftsmanship fascinated and inspired me. Two of many memorable books that I looked at were: Weder Senf noch Safran | Ni sanve ni safran eftir Franz Mon, Jean-Claude Loubières and Johannes Strugalla, and Cinabre by Johannes Strugalla.
Despalles Edition was founded by Despalles and Strugalla in 1982. They have a gallery in Paris and printing facilities in Mainz. They work with both French and German artists.

MINDY BELOFF – INTIMA PRESS

Um Mínótárinn hennar Mindyar: Mindy Belloff er listamaður, hönnuður, prentari og útgefandi sem hefur rekið útgáfufyrirtækið Intima Press á 32 Union Square East, Studio 310, New York síðan árið 1996. Ég rakst óvænt á nýjasta stórvirkið hennar: A Golden Thread: The Minotaur – A Contemporary Illumination, og heillaðist alveg. Á slóðinni hér: View Prospectus má fá hugmynd um verkið og útgáfuna og til að fá innsýn inn í hvernig sagan mótar hönnunina og prentunina er gaman að kíkja á: Let’s See That Printed: Mindy Belloff of Intima Press’s ‘Minotaur’.

About Mindy´s Minotau: Mindy Belloff, artist, designer, printer, and publisher, has been running Intima Press in 32 Union Square East, Studio 310, New York since 1996. I came across her “new tour de force edition “ A Golden Thread: The Minotaur – A Contemporary Illumination. And became totally fascinated. Á ferð og flugi | CODEX VII

🇮🇸 ARKIR gerðu góða ferð til Kaliforníu á CODEX-bókamessuna í Richmond við San Fransisco flóa. Átta ARKIR stóðu vaktina við íslenska sýningarborðið dagana 3.-6. febrúar og tóku þátt í sýningarverkefninu Codex Nordica ásamt því að eiga hlutdeild í bókverkasafninu Bibliotek Nordica. Fjöldi gesta kynnti sér verk norrænu listamannanna í gömlu Ford-verksmiðjunni í Craneway-skálanum. Þar var margt um manninn og ráðslagað um sölu og sýningar bókverka af öllum toga. Listamenn og umboðsmenn þeirra komu hvaðanæva að úr heiminum og fjölbreytni verkanna var gríðarleg. Við hittum góða vini og kynntumst nýjum og munum án efa njóta ávaxta af ferðinni un langa hríð.
Næstu vikur birtum við fleiri myndir af því sem fyrir augu bar. Fylgist með!

🇬🇧 Eight members of ARKIR made an awesome trip to California and took part in the CODEX VII book fair in the beautiful old Craneway Pavilion in Richmond by the San Fransisco Bay, joining in the exhibition concept Codex Nordica and Bibliotek Nordica, along with fellow artists from the Nordic countries: Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. We met good friends and made new friends and connections. It was a busy fair where sales and shows were planned by artists and agents from all over the world. 
The next weeks to come we will post more pictures from the fair, showing the wide range of the diverse book art that was exhibited. Stay tuned!

Á bókverkamessu í Bandaríkjunum | Next stop California: CODEX VII

🇮🇸 Undanfarnar vikur hafa ARKIR undirbúið þátttöku á CODEX bókverkasýningunni í Kaliforníu, sem fer fram dagana 3.-6. febrúar 2019, eins og áður hefur komið fram. Átta meðlimir ARKA halda til San Fransisco nú í byrjun febrúar. CODEX sýningin er haldin annað hvert ár, nú í sjöunda sinn og er ein virtasta og fjölsóttasta bókakaupstefna sinnar tegundar í heiminum. ARKIR munu sýna bókverk á sameiginlegum vettvangi norrænna bókverkalistamanna undir merkjum CODEX NORDICA. Kastljósum verður einnig beint að norrænum bókverkum á málþingi CODEX kaupstefnunnar. Eitt af verkefnunum er Bibliotek Nordica, – safn bókverka valdra listamanna, en verkin eru öll unnin sérstaklega af tilefninu. Fyrir verkefninu CODEX NORDICA fer norrænn hópur sem starfað hefur að ýmsum sýningum undir heitinu CODEX POLARIS.

🇬🇧 Past weeks ARKIR have been preparing participation in the seventh CODEX book fair in California, from Feb 3.-6, 2019. Eight members of ARKIR will travel to San Francisco and exhibit books by ARKIR. The group will be a part of the art project CODEX NORDICA that represents book artists from the Nordic countries: Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Sweden. Nordic book arts will also be in focus at the book fair’s symposium.  ARKIR are looking forward to visit and participate in “one of the top three book fairs in the world.”* The project CODEX NORDICA is organized by book artists of the artist’s network CODEX POLARIS. CODEX NORDICA at CODEX 2019 BOOK FAIR and SYMPOSIUM SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, USA, 3rd to 6th February 2019

Over 120 artists from the Nordic countries represented at CODEX 2019 For the CODEX 2019 event Codex Polaris has been invited to curate a Nordic focus featuring artists’ books from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. CODEX, a four-day art book fair held every two years in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, is one of the world’s largest book fairs for ‘handmade book as a work of art’. Over 200 stands show works from more than 20 countries and attracts over 5,000 visitors, including collectors from world-leading art institutions and libraries.

CODEX NORDICA will be showing work on five stands, in collaboration with partners from each of the countries: Pist Protta (DK), Tatjana Bergelt (FI), ARKIR Book Arts Group (IS), Codex Polaris (NO) and Lina Nordenström / Carina Fihn (SE). In addition, BIBLIOTEK NORDICA, a collaborative project organised by Codex Polaris will be launched at CODEX 2019 in its own stand. This is a library of ‘hot of the press’ books, by 82 Nordic artists. Three speakers will be taking at the Symposium and 25 of the participating artists will be attending Codex 2019.

An exhibition of POSTED/UNPOSTED ++, another collaborative project will open at the San Francisco Center for the Book as part of the Codex Nordica program on 2nd February and Codex Polaris will be talking at the Book Club of California on 4th February.

CODEX POLARIS is an art collective based in Bergen, Norway. Over the last five years, the group has organised a series of artists’ book events, exhibitions and participated in book fairs at home and abroad. The initiative focuses on the book as an art object, the book as a sculpture or installation and the handmade multiple.

If you are planning on visiting CODEX 2019 don’t miss this opportunity to meet the Nordic artists at the fair and see a large collection Nordic artists’ books, many that will be on show in the USA for the first time. Codex 2019 is a dangerous place for book lovers, there are also another 214 stands!
