“Humans have had the need to adorn themselves since ancient times. Jewellery fulfils this desire and at the same time reflects peoples’ tastes and, often, their social status. Jewellery can be laden with emotional value but can also serve as a platform for expressing views and values of the wearer. Ingiríður Óðinsdóttir and Jóna Sigríður Jónsdóttir share a background in textile design, while Helga Mogensen is primarily a jewellery designer. There is a sense of journey that connects their work. Helga works with cartography, Ingiríður’s work relates to walking through Icelandic nature with an unexpected twist and Jóna’s work evokes connections to tribal jewellery traditions.”

Bókverkasýningin í Kristiansand Kunsthall | Nordic Artist Books – exhibition in Norway

🇮🇸 Norræna bókverkasýningin KUNSTNERBOKEN – unik og mangfoldig, sem opnaði 2. september í Kristiansand Kunsthall í Noregi, hefur vakið verðskuldaða athygli. Níu ARKIR taka þátt, en einn annar íslenskur listamaður á verk á sýningunni því bókverk Magnúsar Pálssonar, The Offs, var fengið að láni frá Nýlistasafninu.

Öll umfjöllun hefur verið jákvæð og fagleg. Frida Forsgren, dósent í listasögu, skrifaði m.a. eftirfarandi í greininni „Begjær for bøker“ í dagblaðinu Fædrelandsvennen:

🇬🇧 The exhibition ‘KUNSTNERBOKEN – unik og mangfoldig’ – Nordic Artist Books – was opened on Sept 2nd in Kristiansand Kunsthall, Norway, and it has attracted well-deserved attention. Nine members of ARKIR participated and made a trip to the opening of the exhibition, as well as taking part in an interesting seminar on the art of books. The exhibition was a true delight to visit, thanks to the awesome curators, the trio of Codex Polaris: Randi Annie Strand, Imi Maufe and Rita Marhaug, and the staff of Kristiansand Kunsthall. They had created a beautiful and amazing exhibition.

All coverage in the media has been highly positive. Frida Forsgren, associate professor in art history, wrote thus in an article in the newspaper Fædrelandsvennen: Begjær for bøker (Lust for books):

You might think that a book exhibition sounds a bit dry? But don’t be fooled. The art gallery’s new exhibition is sensual and engaging, and really masters to push the boundaries of what a book reading experience can be. […] Because the exhibition is massive. It is simply a library within a library that requires several visits if one is to be able to capture all the nuances on all these book pages. But perhaps it is not so important to get everything in every detail? The most important thing here is the joy of the book, the paper, the rich illustrations, the craftsmanship, and all the possibilities that open up on every page. The delight of feeling the physical form and material of the book. And this exhibition really manages to appeal to that.

Helga Pálína sýnir í Pálshúsi | ARKIR in 2021 – art exhibitions

🇮🇸 ARKIR sinna fjölbreyttri listsköpun og sýna verk sín víða. Nú stendur yfir sýning Helgu Pálínu Brynjólfsdóttur í safna- og menningarfræðisetrinu Pálshúsi í Ólafsfirði. Sýningin nefnist Tengingar og stendur frá 31. júlí – 10. september 2021. Hér má lesa um sýninguna en í sýningarskrá segir m.a.:

From the exhibition catalog:
“Textile artist Helga Pálína Brynjólfsdóttir has for years been experimenting with sewing into rocks, the colorful gray-brown nuances of the tuff, but also pieces of wood, new and old. She carves and weaves, makes holes in back and front to call forth sculpture, lines and angles.
At the exhibition in Pálshús, Helga Pálína, evokes new connections in wood and stones with her threads, pays homage to nature and history, transforms it and broadens our vision with color splendor and delicate embroidery. The past and the future, the hard and the soft, the feminine and the masculine, the depth of the earth and the hurling of modern technology, all unite in a playful dance.” – Text by Jórunn Sigurðardóttir.

Since 1989, Helga Pálína has taught textile art and textile printing at the Design and Architecture Department of the Iceland University of the Arts, at the Textile Department of The Reykjavík School of Visual Arts and at the Textile Department of the Icelandic School of Arts and Crafts.

🇬🇧 Eight members of ARKIR made an awesome trip to California and took part in the CODEX VII book fair in the beautiful old Craneway Pavilion in Richmond by the San Fransisco Bay, joining in the exhibition concept Codex Nordica and Bibliotek Nordica, along with fellow artists from the Nordic countries: Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. We met good friends and made new friends and connections. It was a busy fair where sales and shows were planned by artists and agents from all over the world.
The next weeks to come we will post more pictures from the fair, showing the wide range of the diverse book art that was exhibited. Stay tuned!

Tóftir | Ruins – Helga Pálína Brynjólfsdóttir

Við höldum áfram að kynna verk á sýningunni JAÐARLAND / BORDERLAND sem nú stendur yfir í KCC Center for Book Arts í University of Southern Maine í Portland, Maine, í Bandaríkjunum. Eitt verkanna á sýningunni er „Tóftir“ eftir Helgu Pálínu Brynjólfsdóttur og hún kynnir hér verkið sitt í nokkrum orðum.

Tóftir eftir Helgu Pálínu Brynjólfsdóttur

„Tóftir, bæjarrústir torfhúsa, finnast út um allt Ísland og hafa víða verið teiknaðar upp. Þær birtast okkur í náttúrunni, veðursorfnar og eyddar, sem nokkurs konar tákn eða stafróf. Í þessu bókverki birtast þær eins og hvítir skuggar úr fortíðinni.

We continue to post photos and information on a selection of works that are displayed at the current book art exhibition BORDERLAND in KCC Center for Book Arts at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine. Here Helga Pálína Brynjólfsdóttir presents her artwork “Ruins”.

Ruins by Helga Pálína Brynjólfsdóttir

“Ruins of old turf farmhouses are found throughout Iceland and many of them have been documented in drawings. These forms appear in the landscape, weather-worn and half destroyed as symbols of past habitation or as alphabetical forms. In this artist´s book they appear as white shadowy forms from the past.

Gleðilegt ár! ∼ Happy New Book Art Year 2016!

ARKIR-Sorpualmanak2016web

Sandhya-ARKIR

Ösp, Kristín Þóra, Inga, Sandhya, Bogga, Svanborg og Anna Snædís.

Dear friends of ARKIR, co-workers and fellow artists! We wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! May your lives be filled with joy and good art!

Looking back at the past year we state that ARKIR Book Arts Group had a fine year. Our exhibition ENDURBÓKUN / RE-BOOK, that originally opened in Gerðuberg Culturehouse, was later opened in Reykjanesbær Library in April and in Spöngin Culturehouse in July. We can confirm that the exhibition will travel further in the new year. All the works were created by using old books, mostly discared books from Gerðuberg Library. Photos exhibiting book art from ENDURBÓKUN / RE-BOOK are illustrating a 2016-calendar published by SORPA, a non-profit waste management firm owned and run by seven municipalities in Iceland’s Capital Area. SORPA’s almanac is available at all the recycling centers but can also be viewed and downloaded here. Artwork on cover shows Orðaflaumur (Stream of Words) by Inga, Ingiríður Óðinsdóttur. Photos by Binni.

In October ARKIR took part in the exhibition DRIFTING CLOUDS in Nicosia in Cyprus. Earlier in the year, ARKIR members partisipated in a Nordic Artists’ Books exhibition in Studio Gallery Jangva Studio in Helsinki, as a part of Gallery Jangva’s 20th anniversary. Works by Anna Snædís, Sigurborg and Svanborg were also selected for ERROR – 7th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2015” with the theme “Error” {Mistake}. The 7th triennial was opened in Gallery Titanikas, an exhibition hall belonging to the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Selections were also exhibited in Leipzig, Germany; Vercelli, Italy; in Austria; and more. For further information see the triennial’s webpage: ERROR. The video above shows moments from the show in Vercelli: Museo Leone, Vercelli & “Studio 10″ City Gallery.

ARKIR also had good visitors from abroad, – for instance the poet and book artist Nancy Campbell as reported here; and artist Sandhya who also uses poems and texts in her works.

With a series of photos from the year 2015, we send our best wishes and hope for a splendid year 2016!

When the exhibition HOME opened in Silkeborg in Denmark last year, each one of us in ARKIR wrote a short text about the idea behind one artist’s book we had made for the exhibition. That way we made a series of blogposts on the theme: HOME. The exhibition has travelled from Denmark to Nuuk in Greenland and is now to be seen in the Nordic house in Reykjavík. Click on the images to read more about some of ARKIR works.
The exhibition in the Nordic house is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 12 to 5 pm. Open until 23. February.

One of Helga Pálína Brynjólfsdóttir’s artwork at the exhibition Home is called Peaceful homes. When the book is opened rows of mossy gravestones pop up. We ask Helga Pálína about her work: is our last residence a peaceful one?
“Not everyone will experience a peaceful home in their lifetime, but I believe that in the end, death will bring peace to all. I see the graveyard as our last residence on earth and it’s my impression that they truly are the peaceful dwellings of the dead. Many graveyards also offer serene peace and restfulness for the living who visit the graves of their loved ones.“ And Helga explains how her idea came about:
„My book art object “Peaceful homes” was inspired by walks in Reykjavik’s old cemetery, Hólavallakirkjugarður, where I shot the photos I use in the book. It is the largest graveyard from the 19th century and like an oasis in the city, with assorted trees and thriving flora behind its concrete walls. The gravestones and crosses are varied in sizes and shapes, the oldest dating from 1838. Some may even look like houses, some are broken and askew, many covered with moss. The old cemetery has been called the biggest and the oldest museum of Reykjavík. It is surely a peaceful museum.”

Helga Pálína lauk listnámi UIAH, Listiðnaðarháskólanum í Helsinki, Finnlandi, og námi í kennsluréttindum frá Kennaraháskóla Íslands. Hún vinnur að margvíslegum textílverkum og bókverkum sem hún hefur sýnt á sýningum hérlendis og erlendis. Hún býr og starfar í Reykjavík.

Helga Pálína studied textile arts and design at UIAH, The University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland, and finished teaching ecucation at the School of Education / University of Iceland. She works on her textile and book art which she has exhibited in Iceland and abroad. She lives and works in Reykjavík.Helga Pálína
